UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE – IDENTITY DESIGN

The University of Johannesburg’s Emergency Medical Care (EMC) Department is a global leader in responsive medical and rescue training—shaping the next generation of paramedics and emergency responders. Recognised among the top programs worldwide, UJ EMC continues to set the benchmark for innovative, real-world medical education.

THE BRIEF:
To design a distinctive identity for the EMC Department that unites both the medical and rescue aspects of its work. The identity needed to be bold, recognisable, and adaptable—suitable for embroidery on uniforms, as well as application across rescue vehicles, equipment, and communication materials.

THE APPROACH:
Drawing from the globally recognised Star of Life, the design integrates a modern wordmark encircled by a protective ring. This circular form symbolises unity, protection, and community—core values of the department. The result is a contemporary, authoritative emblem that embodies the strength, precision, and compassion of emergency medical care.
